Managing Farms with IT

What is the Project?

Menter a Busnes works with a network of further education colleges throughout Wales to develop the IT skills of members of farming families. Up to six two-hour on-farm visits are offered to assist farmers to make the best use of their computers to manage their businesses.

Why does it exist?

It is part of a wider scheme under the auspices of the Welsh Assembly Government offering free computer training to farmers. (This project will terminate at the end of September 2008.)

How does it work?

A network of Mentors have been appointed throughout Wales, who visit farms to ensure that farmers use the information gained on computer courses and use any agricultural software to its full potential. Menter a Busnes can offer assistance with IT training in three specific ways.

Firstly by mentoring those who have received their training from the colleges to make greater use of computers in their farm business. These can receive 6 two hour sessions to assist them put what was learnt into practice.

Secondly, individuals who have a barrier to attending a course can have one to one training on the farm to help them overcome their barrier and go on to attend the college courses at a later stage. Up to 8 two hour sessions are available. An assessment form needs to be completed to apply for this service.

The third part of the service that is available is training on the use of benchmarking programmes that are available for farm businesses. 4 two hour sessions are available for this. Benchmarking programmes are available from Welsh Meat Promotion, The Dairy Development Centre, Gelli Aur and the Organic Centre Wales at Aberystwyth.

Where is it available?

It is available to any farm located in Wales.

Computer Courses

Further to this, Menter a Busnes also run computer courses in Gwynedd and South Powys.
