Wales’ top producers urged to think big at the 11th Wales the True Taste Food & Drink Awards

  The best food and drink products from across Wales have been recognised at the 11th Wales the True Taste Food and Drink Awards. And this year’s True Taste Champion, Robin Jones of Village Bakery, Coedpoeth, Wrexham, has urged those producers to make the most of their success. The third generation of bakers in the family, Robin recognises that many smaller operators may be reluctant to think big, but urges food and drink producers to build on their passion for what they do.  He said: “There are a lot of lifestyle businesses which make excellent artisan products.  But there needs to be more recognition of products which can be scaled up. That is where Wales is going to have an impact on the UK stage.” Alun Davies, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, was impressed by the standard of entries in the independently judged Awards.

Sales of Welsh Food and Drink Products Hit ÂŁ1.8 Million at Three Stores

Popular Welsh television presenter Daloni Metcalfe has agreed to launch Welsh Food and Drink Fortnight from October 19 to November 4 to celebrate the phenomenal sales success story of the EUROSPAR stores in Dolgellau and Blaenau Ffestiniog and the Spar store in Pwllheli. A host of events are planned to thank customers for their loyalty at the three stores, which have recorded sales of ÂŁ1.8 million – up ÂŁ300,000 on 2011 - for quality Welsh food and drink products in the past year. The stores, which are owned by award-winning entrepreneur, Conrad Davies, are now supplied by 80 Welsh producers. Most of the producers are within a 50 miles radius of the stores.  Welsh Food and Drink Fortnight marks the end of Mr Davies’ year as Wales the True Taste Champion.

Welsh Producers Head for Speciality & Fine Food Fair

Welsh food and drink producers are heading for London, and one of the most important annual UK food industry events, the Speciality & Fine Food Fair, Olympia, (September 2 - 4).   A wide range of Welsh food and drink producers will be attending the event at Olympia under the auspices of the Welsh Government’s Wales the True Taste brand.   Now in its 13th year the Speciality Fine Food Fair attracts retailers and those in the hospitality industry who are looking for fine quality local and regional produce with provenance, including delicatessens, farm shops, independent retailers, cafes, restaurants, and wholesalers.   Alun Davies, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries said:   “The Speciality & Fine Food Fair is an important event for Welsh food and drink producers and I am delighted that so many Welsh companies are taking part in this event.

Entrepreneur Calls in the Experts to Hook Extra Fish Sales

Growing customer demand for locally caught fresh fish has encouraged an award-winning entrepreneur to expand the fishmonger’s section of his busy EUROSPAR store in Dolgellau. Having purchased a larger fresh fish counter for the store, Wales the True Taste Champion Conrad Davies decided to invest in increasing the skills and knowledge of staff so that they can improve customer service and advice.  With support from the Welsh Government as part of the Trade Development programme, expert Adam Whittle from the famous Billingsgate Seafood School in London and Gill Reacord, owner of the award-winning fishmonger Gill’s Plaice in Tywyn and Aberdyfi, to give a one day course at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor in Dolgellau. Nine staff members, two lecturers from the college and Mr Davies himself attended the course.

DEPUTY MINISTER VISITS STATE OF THE ART NORTH WALES BAKERY

Supplying one of the UK’s best-known food retailers is the icing on the cake for North Wales bakers, The Village Bakery. Alun Davies, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries visited the company’s new Wrexham bakery to see production at the award winning business, which recently secured a contract to supply in-store bakery scones to Marks & Spencer’s CafĂ© Revive cafes in the UK. The scones are sold in the food hall via the in-store bakery as well as in the cafes. Established nearly 80 years ago the family owned business has three sites in North East Wales, including a recently opened state of the art craft bakery in Wrexham producing scones and morning goods. The company, which is run by the Jones family – Alan and sons Robin, Christien and Tim – employs 230 people producing a range of baked ambient, baked frozen and unbaked frozen goods.

Jamie Oliver spends day with pioneering welsh sushi company

Immediate: October 31, 2011 Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has spent a day with a pioneering company that makes sushi in the South Wales valleys. Kai and Jo Chan run Sushi Day shop in Abercynon, which also delivers sushi to office workers in Cardiff. Oliver was particularly interested in the couple’s trademarked ‘Swshi', an East meets West range of sushi incorporating traditional Welsh ingredients, lamb, leeks and laverbread. The Chans had hoped to feature in the popular chef’s new series, Jamie's Great Britain, but sadly, due to the number of interesting food stories that were filmed in South Wales, Sushi Day did not make the final cut. The programme will be broadcast by Channel 4 on November 22 at 9pm.

Sales of Welsh products hit ÂŁ1.5 million at North Wales stores

The EUROSPAR stores in Dolgellau and Blaenau Ffestiniog and the Spar store in Pwllheli, which are all owned by award-winning entrepreneur Conrad Davies, are now supplied by 70 Welsh producers. Most of the producers are within a 50 miles radius of the stores.
